Summer Solstice Florida's Unique AC Issues

Summer Solstice: Florida’s Unique AC Issues

Happy Summer Solstice! To celebrate the longest day of the year we wanted to explain a few of Florida’s unique AC issues and how to save money on electric bills during those hot and long dog days of summer.

How Florida’s Humidity Affects Your AC

True Floridians know that we aren’t just fighting the heat to stay cool – but also the wretchedly humid conditions of the Sunshine State’s sub-tropical climate. Humidity makes the air feel dense, muggy and even soggy. While there is not a lot even our HVAC experts can do about Florida’s outside atmosphere, there is, however, much they can do for your indoor comfort needs!

An external dehumidifier relies on the concept that air loses its ability to retain moisture when it is cooled. Cooling coils meet the humid air inside of a dehumidifier, then releasing moisture through condensation and then blown back out of the device, cool and dry. Home Humidity levels should be between 30 to 50 percent for optimal comfort and protection of home goods. Do you feel that there is excess humidity in your home? Don’t hesitate to call our AC technicians to come and inspect.

Can Salt Damage Your Air Conditioner?

While many Florida residents have access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the nearby waterfront retreats do come with a price: salt corrosion. Live near a body of water in Florida (most have some salt content)? Be aware. The salty air can corrode the aluminum oxide on your air conditioning equipment, leaving you with costly repair bills for a system that is just a few years old. Regular AC maintenance can help to protect against any salt damage or corrosion.

The best way to DIY-protect your AC from salt corrosion is by making sure to change your filter each month or so, keep the condenser coils clean and join our Comfort Club Maintenance Program to take the guesswork out of caring your air conditioner!

How Florida’s Summer Heat Affects Your AC

Most people from around the country envision Florida to be a beacon of sunshine and warmth year-round, and while this is mostly true, there are a few months that have extreme hot temperatures. Air conditioners everywhere work overtime during June, July, August and even September to keep everyone — people, pets and homes alike — cool, comfortable and damage free. Typically, this means that electric bills also spike to keep up with the cooling needs. Luckily, there are many ways to cut energy costs while staying comfortable. Strategic landscaping, frequent air filter replacements, and an AC maintenance tune-up are a few ways to get you started.
