Ducted Heat Pump Services: Year-Round Heating and Cooling from One System

A heat pump does the work of two systems, which means it runs nearly every month of the year and carries parts no air conditioner has. A+ Air Conditioning and Refrigeration installs, repairs, and maintains ducted heat pumps with the reversing valve, defrost cycle, and auxiliary heat tested every time, not just the cooling side.

Our Ducted Heat Pump Services

Because a heat pump never really gets an off-season, service matters more here than it would on cooling-only equipment.

Heat Pump Repair & Service

Cold air in heating mode, auxiliary heat running constantly, a defrost cycle that never engages, or ice on the outdoor unit. We test the reversing valve and defrost control board, not just refrigerant pressures.

The System That Suits This Climate Better Than Almost Anywhere

A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it. In cooling mode it pulls heat out of your home; in cooler months it reverses and pulls heat energy from the outdoor air instead. That approach is most efficient when the gap between indoor and outdoor temperature is modest, which describes a North Central Florida winter almost perfectly.

The tradeoff is workload. Your heat pump does not sit idle the way a furnace does. It cools through our long summer, heats through the brief winter, and rarely rests. That is why we recommend service twice a year and why our tune-up covers components a standard AC visit never touches. A+ Air Conditioning and Refrigeration has serviced ducted heat pumps across Gainesville since 1998, installing American Standard systems and repairing every other major brand.

What Makes Heat Pump Service Different

Plenty of contractors treat a heat pump like an air conditioner that happens to run backwards in January. The components below are the ones that get skipped when they do, and they are the source of most of the heat pump complaints we are called out to fix.

Watch Your Auxiliary Heat

If your electric bill climbs sharply in winter, check whether auxiliary heat is engaging constantly. In North Central Florida it should engage rarely. Constant auxiliary heat is usually a symptom of a heat pump that is not performing, and it is one of the clearest signals worth a service call.

The Components We Test That Others Skip

swap_horiz
The reversing valve north_east

This valve is what lets one system both heat and cool. When it sticks or fails, the system locks into a single mode, which is why a heat pump can blow cold air with the thermostat calling for heat. We test its switching on every maintenance visit rather than waiting for a complaint.

ac_unit
The defrost cycle south_east

On cold, damp mornings when temperatures hover near freezing, frost forms on the outdoor coil and the system must periodically defrost itself. A failed defrost control board leaves the unit iced over and unable to heat. We verify the cycle actually runs.

bolt
Auxiliary heat strips south_east

Most systems include electric heat strips as backup for the coldest hours. Here they should engage very infrequently. We test the strips, the sequencer relays, and the safety controls, and confirm they are not activating when the heat pump alone should be keeping up.

nest_thermostat_zirconium_eu
Thermostat compatibility south_east

Heat pumps need a thermostat that understands changeover and manages auxiliary heat properly. A standard cooling thermostat, or a smart model configured incorrectly, can drive up bills without any mechanical fault at all. We check the configuration, not just the wiring.

We also measure temperature differentials in both modes and write every reading down, so the next visit starts from evidence rather than a fresh guess.

Is It the Right System for You?

When a Heat Pump Is the Better Choice

We would rather you pick the right system than the one we happen to be standing next to. Here is the honest split.

check_circle
A heat pump suits you if you want one system for heating and cooling, do not have gas service, or are replacing both an aging air conditioner and an aging heater at the same time.
mode_heat
A split system with a furnace may suit you better if you already have a healthy gas furnace, prefer gas heat, or have ductwork optimized around that configuration.
schedule
Consider replacement timing if your current heat pump is past 12 to 15 years, needs a second or third repair, or still uses R-22 refrigerant, which has been phased out and is no longer manufactured.

Whichever direction you lean, the in-home estimate is free and starts with a Manual J load calculation rather than a rule of thumb.

Getting Full Value from the System

A Heat Pump Cannot Outrun Bad Ductwork

Heat pumps deliver air at a gentler temperature than a furnace does, which makes distribution losses more noticeable. If some rooms never quite catch up, the equipment is often not the limitation.

Every ducted heat pump we install includes a ductwork inspection, and we will tell you when repairs there would do more for comfort than a larger unit would.

Answering Your Questions

Heat Pump Questions from Gainesville Homeowners

Both cool your home the same way. A heat pump adds a reversing valve, which lets it run the cycle backwards and pull heat energy from outdoor air to warm your home in cooler months. That means one system handles both seasons instead of pairing an air conditioner with a separate furnace.

Yes. Modern heat pumps deliver strong heating output through the cold snaps that dip into the 30s here. Most systems also include auxiliary electric heat strips as a backup, though in North Central Florida those engage very infrequently. If yours runs on auxiliary heat constantly, something is wrong and it is worth a service call.

The most common causes are a stuck or failed reversing valve, a low refrigerant charge, or a defrost control board malfunction that has left the outdoor unit iced over. A thermostat configured for the wrong system type can also produce this. All four require a technician to diagnose properly.

Twice per year is our recommendation: once before the cooling season and once before heating season. A heat pump accumulates far more operating hours than a cooling-only system, and the heating side has components that only get exercised in winter. Comfort Club members typically receive two scheduled visits per year.

With consistent maintenance, expect 12 to 15 years of reliable service in this climate. Repair usually wins when the system is under ten years old and needs a common component. Replacement becomes the better investment at 12 to 15 years and beyond, when repairs are stacking up, or when the system still uses R-22 refrigerant.
