Plenty of contractors treat a heat pump like an air conditioner that happens to run backwards in January. The components below are the ones that get skipped when they do, and they are the source of most of the heat pump complaints we are called out to fix.
Watch Your Auxiliary Heat
If your electric bill climbs sharply in winter, check whether auxiliary heat is engaging constantly. In North Central Florida it should engage rarely. Constant auxiliary heat is usually a symptom of a heat pump that is not performing, and it is one of the clearest signals worth a service call.
The Components We Test That Others Skip
This valve is what lets one system both heat and cool. When it sticks or fails, the system locks into a single mode, which is why a heat pump can blow cold air with the thermostat calling for heat. We test its switching on every maintenance visit rather than waiting for a complaint.
On cold, damp mornings when temperatures hover near freezing, frost forms on the outdoor coil and the system must periodically defrost itself. A failed defrost control board leaves the unit iced over and unable to heat. We verify the cycle actually runs.
