How Often Should I Clean or Replace Air Filters?
When was the last time you changed your air filters? Save for a couple of Type-A personality types who probably have reminders set up on their cell phones, this is one of those household chores that easily falls through the cracks.
Most people won’t even think about changing their filters until they start noticing that the AC is not cooling as well as it used to. However, this is a task that needs to be done regularly to ensure (a) AC efficiency, (b) the air quality inside your home, and (c) to prevent your power bill from increasing unnecessarily.
How often should you change your AC filters?
Now that we’ve got your attention, be aware that the frequency associated in changing your filters will vary depending on your circumstances:
1. How many people live in your home? The more people live in your home, the more often you have to change the air filters. Especially if anyone smokes or suffers from asthma. If one or both apply to your household, we recommend HEPA filters, since they trap the highest amount of dust particles and allergens. They also tend to be washable, so you can reuse them (just make sure to read the manual first, since there are variations).
Washable HEPA filters can be rinsed under a faucet. Once clean, let them air dry for 24 hours before placing them back into the air exchange.
Non-washable HEPA filters can be removed from the unit, vacuumed, and reinstalled.
Regardless of whether you have the washable or the non-washable type, always remember to turn off your AC before working on it.
2. Do you have any pets? If you have pets, you’re familiar with the amount of hair they shed on a daily basis. You can’t even pick them up for a quick cuddle without noticing your clothes are completely covered in dog or cat hair. If this is your situation, consider changing your filters at least once a month.
3. Air quality inside your home: If anyone in your home smokes, the air quality is affected significantly, so change the filters at least once a month. Same goes if you live in a city with lots of pollution.
4. Type of air filter: It’s very tempting to buy low-cost air filters. However, since they need to be changed more often, you’ll end up spending more money in the long run. A good rule of thumb is to pay attention to the filter’s MERV ratings. This acronym stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it ranges from 1 to 20. The higher the number, the better quality the filter (HEPA filters are usually between 17 and 20).
